What began as only a yearlong commitment, launched a lifelong passion for Dr. Jim O’Connell ’70.
Since 1985, when he helped found the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP), Dr. O’Connell has been dedicated to providing comprehensive medical care for the homeless population in his community.
After graduating summa cum laude from Notre Dame, and then graduating from Harvard Medical School, Dr. O’Connell was ready to begin conducting clinical work in hospital rooms. But at the start of his career, Dr. O’Connell found himself caring for patients in the streets of Boston and washing feet instead, giving him a new perspective on healthcare—one which requires tenderness to both the body and soul.
