Growing up in the barrio of Detroit, JoAnn Chávez ’86, ’90 J.D. could have found herself trapped in the cycle of poverty and addiction that surrounded her. But when she made her way to Notre Dame, she was determined to write her own narrative—not in spite of her upbringing, but because of it.
Tom Ahearne ’81
Tom Ahearne ’81 says he is the opposite of a man with a plan. So much so that he only applied to Notre Dame because a family friend from church, Tom Campbell ’54, filled out the application for him and told him, “All you have to do is sign it, put it in this stamped envelope, and drop it in the mail,” Ahearne laughs as he recalls that pivotal moment in his life.

This April, the Notre Dame Club of Grand Rapids followed Father Sorin’s call to be a “most powerful means for good" to Benjamin’s Hope, a 52-acre alumni-founded farmstead community that provides semi-independent living for 32 adults with developmental differences.
